This volume investigates the theory of the effect of static electric fields on one-electron states in nanocylindrical and nanospherical heterolayers and quantized semiconductor films. Homogeneous external electrostatic field for all these structures has been considered as a “universal” modulating factor. For structures with radial symmetry, a study on the influence of radial static field and the electric field of a charged ring on one-electron states is presented. Chapters focusing on homogeneous field effect on low-dimensional excitonic states in the quantized films and quantum wires – in both wide bandgap and narrowband semiconductors – are also included. Other contents include calculations on weak, moderate and strong electric fields, quantum-mechanical approximation and perturbation theory, the quasi-classical approximation (WKB method). Readers will benefit from the varied methodological approach to the subject which will give a concrete analytical framework to solve problems related to nanoscale semiconductor design. The reference should prove to be useful to academics and professionals working in semiconductor nanoelectronics research and development.

“Dr. Bakan’s book … is destined to become a landmark in the study of the historical origins of psychoanalysis.” — American Journal of Psychiatry
In this pioneering work, David Bakan challenges the popular view of Freud as an entirely secular intellectual, schooled in modern culture rather than Jewish traditions. Bakan contends that the father of psychology was profoundly influenced by mystic lore about which he appeared to know very little — and which represents the antithesis of scientific method.
This work is based on the premise that Freudian psychoanalytic theory is largely rooted in the Jewish religion, particularly the mysticism of the kabbala. In a fascinating interpretation of the blend of personality and cultural history, Bakan explains how Freud’s Jewish heritage contributed, either consciously or unconsciously, to his psychological theories. The author employs Freud’s own distinction between being a Jew and the acceptance of Jewish doctrine to demonstrate the effect of Jewish mysticism in the formation of Freud’s technical genius.
With its focus on the ways in which Freud was and was not Jewish, this study offers a model example of the problem of Jewish identity — as embodied by one of the giants of modern science, who professed to be both “infidel” and “Jew.”

Not male pattern baldness, but the loss of sensory hair, is a very serious topic. Sensory hair cells convert sound and motion into our sense of hearing, movement, and head position. In mammals, the loss of hair cells is irreversible. Or is it? Hair cells in other vertebrates are capable of regenerating and recovering partial or complete function. This book provides a comprehensive survey of the regeneration of sensory hair cells.

Teaching Sunday school at her brother’s church in the Bay area was supposed to help former champion athlete Esther “Essie” Walker understand boys–the better to raise her newborn son as a stellar example of manhood. Fat chance! Enter the eight-year-old male psyche: awful jokes, disrespectful behavior and general mayhem. Essie, the queen of control, finds herself in a brand-new world of chaos.
The pressure builds on all fronts–Sunday school class, husband’s job, church pageant, aging parents, finances, friends secretly battling illnesses–until Queen Esther has one royal meltdown. God, it seems, has makeover plans for Essie’s competitive nature. Her characteristic control is in very short supply as she gains a better understanding of the nature of imperfection, the value of motherhood and the virtues of a messy but connected life.

Gothic art finds its roots in the powerful architecture of the cathedrals of northern France. It is a medieval art movement that evolved throughout Europe over more than 200 years.Leaving curved Roman forms behind, the architects started using flying buttresses and pointed arches to open up cathedrals to daylight. A period of great economic and social change, the Gothic era also saw the development of a new iconography celebrating the Holy Mary – in drastic contrast to the fearful themes of dark Roman times. Full of rich changes in all of the various art forms (architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.), Gothic art paved the way for the Italian Renaissance and International Gothic movement.

Sometimes the hardest role in life is being true to yourself.
Jade Weir did the social scene. She played the ditzy Hollywood socialite and ran with the requisite fast crowds. Until one night and a shooting changed everything. Now she’s ready to go toe to toe with the handsome Sheriff’s deputy, Marlon Cross. Toe to toe or kiss for kiss, whichever comes first. The real Jade isn’t the celebutante from television, and she’s ready to do whatever it takes to prove it.
But is he ready for her?
Marlon liked his quiet and simple existence. No ties means no one gets hurt. And then came Jade. She’s a hurricane in high heels and totally trouble for him. She has the power to raise the ghosts in his past, but his heart won’t let him walk away.
Can they find a way to make the lust simmering between them work or will they simply part as the closest of friends?
Reader Advisory: This book contains anal play, sex on the dining room table and a hero bound and determined to get his way.

The roster of McKim, Mead & White’s clients reads like a who’s-who of American business, professional, cultural, and social enterprise in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many of the buildings designed by this distinguished New York firm still stand today — libraries, museums, churches, train stations, banks, office buildings, private clubs, and residences — an imposing testament to the splendor and durability of its achievement.
This magnificent pictorial history is one of the most important documents in the history of American architecture. In 435 superb photographs and over 500 line illustrations, including both floor plans and elevations, it surveys over 160 structures designed by the architects of McKim, Mead & White. Originally published in four massive volumes and now available in an unabridged one-volume paperback edition, this handsome book depicts such famous New York City landmarks (present and former) as Columbia University’s Low Library, the Pierpont Morgan Library, the Municipal Building, the second Madison Square Garden, and the original Pennsylvania Station.
Other major landmarks include private and public buildings and other structures in Boston, Cambridge, Newport, Providence, Princeton, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Montreal. For architects and architectural historians, this book will be a valuable source for its comprehensive views of an unrivaled achievement in American architecture. Social historians and students of Americana will find it revealing for its reflection of the ideas and culture of the times. A new Introduction by Richard Guy Wilson perceptively appraises the McKim, Mead & White legacy for today’s readers.
