A strange assortment of humans and otherworldly beings joins a young soldier of God on his perilous quest through an alternate, technology-free reality ruled by an all-powerful Evil
In an alternate world where the Dark Ages never ended, “the Evil” that arises every five hundred years has prevented all manner of technological advancement, even well into the twentieth century. The son of a powerful English noble, young Duncan Standish has always longed to be a soldier of the Lord, and now he’s been offered a rare opportunity to fulfill his dream. Entrusted with the delivery of an ancient manuscript—purported to be irrefutable evidence of the existence of Jesus Christ—to a noted Oxenford scholar, Duncan must journey many perilous miles in the company of a motley group of fellow travelers, including a goblin, a ghost, and other magical and non-magical companions. But the road they traverse together is fraught with terrible trials that would test even the most devout, for the Evil is strong in this place of dark wonders.
Multiple Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award–winner and SFWA Grand Master Clifford D. Simak moves easily from science fiction to quest fantasy in this enthralling tale of magic, peril, and discovery on an Earth that never was. Rich in color, thrills, and wild invention, and populated by a highly original and unforgettable cast of characters, Fellowship of the Talisman showcases the author’s peerless storytelling skills, demonstrating once again that the great Simak had few equals in the realm of twentieth-century speculative fiction.

18th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence
The ECAI series of conferences keeps growing. This 18th edition received more submissions than the previous ones. About 680 papers and posters were registered through the ECAI 2008 conference system, out of which 518 papers and 43 posters were actually reviewed. The program committee decided to accept 121 full papers (acceptance rate 23 per cent) and 97 posters. Several submitted full papers have been accepted as posters. All posters, presented in these proceedings as short papers, are formally presented in the technical sessions of the main program of the conference, as well as at the poster presentations within a specific session. With respect to previous ECAI conferences, one may notice a relative growth of the Machine Learning and Cognitive Modeling and Interaction areas. The rest of the distribution remains about stable, with marginal fluctuations given that areas are overlapping and their frontiers are not sharp.Papers are accepted in the following research areas: KR&R; Machine Learning; Distributed and Multi-agents Systems; Cognitive Modeling and Interaction; Constraints and search; Model-based Reasoning and Diagnosis; NLP; Planning and scheduling; Perception, Sensing and Cognitive Robotics; and, Uncertainty in AI.

Organized into 13 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the general analysis for the electromagnetic response of a plane stratified medium comprising of any number of parallel homogeneous layers. This text then explains the reflection of electromagnetic waves from planar stratified media. Other chapters consider the oblique reflection of plane electromagnetic waves from a continuously stratified medium. Children of low socioeconomic status often enter school with poor skills, leading them to be misidentified as learning disabled. Educators in Grades K–12 can allocate resources for special education services more effectively and meet the needs of low SES students by preventing students from being placed in the wrong program and by providing readiness supports.
Offering an in-depth look at schools that have realized effective results in remarkable time frames, the authors challenge educators and parents to consider how low expectations can affect student achievement—and emphasize optimism as a necessary tenet of schools’ day-to-day teaching/learning programs and school-community relationships. This resource provides:
Training resources for teaching low SES students
Assessment tools for identifying learning needs
Strategies for building relationships of trust and collaboration throughout the school community
Data charts that illustrate the increase in student achievement from schoolwide initiatives
A bibliography and glossary of pertinent research and terminology
With these strategies and tools, schools can meet the developmental and environmental needs of their most vulnerable students and watch student achievement and confidence soar!
