The decorated sandals worn by prehistoric southwesterners with their complex fiber structures and designs have been dissected, described, and interpreted for a century. Nevertheless, these artifacts remain mysterious in many respects. Teague and Washburn examine these sandals as sources of information on the history of the people known as the Basketmakers.
The unique sandals of early southwestern farmers appear in Basketmaker II and reach their greatest elaboration with the complex fabric structures and colorbanded designs of Basketmaker III. The appearance of this footwear coincides with the transition to fully sedentary maize agriculture. The authors address the origins of these sandals and what they may reveal about population movements onto and around the Colorado Plateau and about the cosmology of early farmers.

Lawrence Boland takes issue with both economic methodologists and practicing economists. He argues that there has been too much ‘methodology for methodology’s sake’ and that mainstream economics might benefit by using methodology to take a critical look at economic theory.

Kareem was an Afghan resistance fighter of the 1980s and was once on the CIA payroll.
But now he’s responsible for the murder of an American CIA agent in Pakistan, which may compromise an intricate, long-planned CIA operation to capture Osama bin Laden.
CIA officer Paul Patterson, who ran Kareem as an agent during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, sets out to track him down. Patterson navigates a shadow land of intrigue in England, Africa, the Middle East, and the U.S., where truth and lies seem to merge. Meanwhile, Muhammad Atta and the other conspirators prepare their attack on the World Trade Center. The climax is a stunning reversal of everything that Patterson’s quest has led him to expect.
Peopled with Washington bureaucrats, old CIA hands who operate by their own set of rules, African rebels, diplomats, and assassins, this thriller captures the world of the CIA and the terrorists with the intensity John le Carré brought to the Cold War.

This book offers an in-depth examination of America’s nuclear weapons policy since the end of the Cold War.
Exploring nuclear forces structure, arms control, regional planning and the weapons production complex, the volume identifies competing sets of ideas about nuclear weapons and domestic political constraints on major shifts in policy. It provides a detailed analysis of the complex evolution of policy, the factors affecting policy formulation, competing understandings of the role of nuclear weapons in US national security discourse, and the likely future direction of policy. The book argues that US policy has not proceeded in a linear, rational and internally consistent direction, and that it entered a second post-Cold War phase under President George W. Bush. However, domestic political processes and lack of political and military interest in America’s nuclear forces have constrained major shifts in nuclear weapons policy.
This book will be of much interest to students of US foreign policy, nuclear proliferation, strategic studies and IR in general.

Can You Spot The Errors? This coin looks a bit mangled, as if a car ran over it. It’s really a copper cent struck on a silver dime. And no, that doesn’t make it worth a nickel.
The excess of metal at the top of the Lincoln cent is called a cud. It is caused when a piece breaks from the die face and leaving a hole into which the metal flows as the coin is struck.
Spot the doubled die on an otherwise common dollar coin. Not all of them can be easily seen with the naked eye. In this case it is at the intersection of the Statue of Liberty’s arm and the spike from her crown. An enlarged photograph inside will reveal it.
It takes a keen eye to spot them, but errors on coins produced by the U.S. Mint occur every year, and they can be worth money to coin collectors. Strike It Rich with Pocket Change is THE book that shows clear, concise photos of those errors and tells what those coins are worth in today’s market.
Don’t miss out.
That cent in your pocket could be worth dollars.
