The Myth of Market Share by Richard Miniter

Why Market Share Is the Fool’s Gold of Business

Richard Miniter skewers the sacred cow of market share and debunks the conventional wisdom that corporate profits rise as you grab more territory in the marketplace. Market share is the fool’s gold of modern business. In reality, companies that maximize market share end up minimizing profits, while their smarter rivals earn higher returns. Three times out of four, on average, the most profitable firm is not the one with the largest slice of the market. Yet the myth of market share continues to hobble and kill great companies, while smaller competitors dig out real profits. Executives, entrepreneurs, investors, and regulators will learn why megamergers often fail, brand extensions wither, and stocks tumble. The Myth of Market Share also reveals a positive and proven strategy for transforming a company into a profit leader. Richard Miniter recounts many cautionary tales of great companies that refused to change—and outlines the practical plans of those that changed and flourished. Managers and investors will profit from knowing why Dell prospers by treating market share as a benchmark, not as a goal. Executives and entrepreneurs can retool their strategies by examining the case studies in this book, including Ryanair, an upstart Irish air carrier that transformed itself into the world’s most profitable airline; International Paper, a manufacturing Goliath that tried to buy success; Boeing, the plane maker that pulled out of a steep dive by jettisoning its market share strategies; and DaimlerChrysler, the carmaker that stalled when it tried to be all things to all people. By providing a road map for persuading doubtful colleagues and leading a company to profit leadership, The Myth of Market Share is an entertaining, historical review and leadership tutorial, delivering proven strategies for generating long-term profits and sustainable growth during these uncertain times. less

Ambient Intelligence- Software and Applications – 7th International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence (ISAmI 2016) by Helena Lindgren

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a recent paradigm emerging from Artificial Intelligence, where computers are used as proactive tools assisting people with their day-to-day activities, making everyone’s life more comfortable. Another main concern of AmI originates from the human computer interaction domain and focuses on offering ways to interact with systems in a more natural way by means user friendly interfaces. This field is evolving quickly as can be witnessed by the emerging natural language and gesture based types of interaction. The inclusion of computational power and communication technologies in everyday objects is growing and their embedding into our environments should be as invisible as possible. In order for AmI to be successful, human interaction with computing power and embedded systems in the surroundings should be smooth and happen without people actually noticing it. The only awareness people should have arises from AmI: more safety, comfort and wellbeing, emerging in a natural and inherent way. ISAmI is the International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence and aiming to bring together researchers from various disciplines that constitute the scientific field of Ambient Intelligence to present and discuss the latest results, new ideas, projects and lessons learned, namely in terms of software and applications, and aims to bring together researchers from various disciplines that are interested in all aspects of this area. less

The Broken Way (with Bonus Content) by Ann Voskamp

A Daring Path into the Abundant Life

This ebook includes the full text of the book plus an exclusive section of beautiful photos paired with powerful passages from the text that is not found in the hardcover. New York Times best-selling author Ann Voskamp sits at the edge of her life and all of her own unspoken brokenness and asks: What if you really want to live abundantly before it’s too late? What do you do if you really want to know abundant wholeness? This is the one begging question that’s behind every single aspect of our lives — and one that The Broken Way rises up to explore in the most unexpected ways.   This one’s for the lovers and the sufferers. For those whose hopes and dreams and love grew so large it broke their willing hearts. This one’s for the busted ones who are ready to bust free, the ones ready to break molds, break chains, break measuring sticks, and break all this bad brokenness with an unlikely good brokenness.  You could be one of the Beloved who is broken — and still lets yourself be loved.  You could be one of them, one who believes freedom can be found not only beyond the fear and pain, but actually  within it. You could discover and trust this broken way — the way to not be afraid of broken things. less

Nuclear Matter in Different Phases and Transitions by Jean-Paul Blaizot

Proceedings of the Workshop Nuclear Matter in Different Phases and Transitions, March 31–April 10, 1998, Les Houches, France

Nuclei in their ground states behave as quantum fluids, Fermi liquids. When the density, or the temperature of that fluid increases, various phase transitions may occur. Thus, for moderate excitation energies, of the order of a few MeV per nucleon, nuclear matter behaves as an ordinary fluid with gaseous and liquid phases, and a coexistence region below a critical temperature. For higher excitation energies, of the order of a few Ge V per nucleon, the composition of nuclear matter changes, nucleons being gradually turned into baryonic resonances of various kinds. Finally, when 3 the energy density exceeds some few GeV /fm , nuclear matter turns into a gas of weakly interacting quarks and gluons. This new phase of matter has been called the quark-gluon plasma, and its existence is a prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics. Collisions of heavy ions produce nuclear matter with various degrees of excitation. In fact, by selecting the impact parameter and the bombarding energy, one can produce nuclear matter with specified baryonic density and excitation energy. Several major experimental programs are under way (for instance at GANIL, with the detector INDRA, at GSI with the detector ALADIN, at the CERN-SPS, at the AGS of Brookhaven, etc. ), or are in preparation (RRIC, LHC, etc. ). The goal of these experiments is to get evidence for the different phases of nuclear matter predicted by the theory, and to study their properties. less

Freelance journalist Dorlores Gunn is a night crawler armed with a ruthless curiosity and a knack for self-preservation. With her drugged-out TV crew in tow, she scours the night city for saleable stories: violent death in the street is just a service industry providing her next clip, and every victim is a potential actor. Criss-crossing her path is Eli, a bike courier who travels with ease through the clogged arteries of the urban core and rides the periphery when the media pounces on a suspected serial killer. Both become entangled in the police investigation when Dolores becomes the target of a stalker and Eli is hunted by a rogue SUV. In the struggle to survive, neither can be sure if they own the streets or the streets own them. From the Paperback edition.

Supply Chain Risk by George A. Zsidisin

A Handbook of Assessment, Management, and Performance

Risk is of fundamental importance in this era of the global economy. Supply chains must into account the uncertainty of demand. Moreover, the risk of uncertain demand can cut two ways: (1) there is the risk that unexpected demand will not be met on time, and the reverse problem (2) the risk that demand is over estimated and excessive inventory costs are incurred. There are other risks in unreliable vendors, delayed shipments, natural disasters, etc. In short, there are a host of strategic, tactical and operational risks to business supply chains. This book will focus on how to assess, evaluate, and control these various risks. SUPPLY CHAIN RISK: A Handbook of Assessment, Management, and Performance provides the parameters of risk management as applied to Supply Chain Management. The book outlines these parameters in six sections, which are: (1) Risk Analysis, Assessment, and Tools; (2) Risk Theory; (3) Supply Chain Design and Risk; (4) Supply Chain Risk Management; (5) Risk and Performance Measurement in Supply Chains; and (6) Supply Chain Security. The book’s introductory chapter covers the development of the field, reviewing both its recent research and practical developments. The final chapter outlines open questions and discusses future directions where research and practice may take Supply Chain Risk as a field. The individual chapters report both quantitative and qualitative studies while emphasizing the relevance, understanding and application by those in the research community, knowledgeable practitioners, and policy makers. less
