The Periodic Kingdom by Peter Atkins

A Journey Into the Land of the Chemical Elements

A ‘travel guide’ to the periodic table, explaining the history, geography and the rules of behaviour in this imagined land. The Periodic Kingdom is a journey of imagination in which Peter Atkins treats the periodic table of elements – the 109 chemical elements in the world, from which everything is made – as a country, a periodic kingdom, each region of which corresponds to an element. Arranged much like a travel guide, the book introduces the reader to the general features of the table, the history of the elements, and the underlying arrangement of the table in terms of the structure and properties of atoms. Atkins sees elements as finely balanced living personalities, with quirks of character and certain, not always outward, dispositions, and the kingdom is thus a land of intellectual satisfaction and infinite delight. less

Original Gangster by Frank Lucas

The Real Life Story of One of America’s Most Notorious Drug Lords

A suspenseful memoir from the real life American gangster, Frank Lucas In his own words, Frank Lucas recounts his life as the former heroin dealer and organized crime boss who ran Harlem during the late 1960s and early 1970s. From being taken under the wing of old time gangster Bumpy Johnson, through one of the most successful drug smuggling operations, to being sentenced to seventy years in prison, Original Gangster is a chilling look at the rise and fall of a modern legacy. Frank Lucas realized that in order to gain the kind of success he craved he would have to break the monopoly that the Italian mafia held in New York. So Frank cut out middlemen and began smuggling heroin into the United States directly from his source in the Golden Triangle by using coffins. Making a million dollars per day selling “Blue Magic”—what was known as the purest heroin on the street—Frank Lucas became one of the most powerful crime lords of his time, while rubbing shoulders with the elite in entertainment, politics, and crime. After his arrest, Federal Judge Sterling Johnson, the special narcotics prosecutor in New York at the time of Lucas’ crimes, called Lucas and his operation “one of the most outrageous international dope-smuggling gangs ever, an innovator who got his own connections outside the U.S. and then sold the narcotics himself in the street.” This powerful memoir reveals what really happened to the man whose career was dramatized in the 2007 feature film American Gangster, exposing a startling look at the world of organized crime. less

Good to Go by Harold Constance

The Life And Times Of A Decorated Member Of The U.S. Navy’s Elite Seal Team Two

“Fractions of a second in time. What amazing violence can be meted out in the blink of an eye.” In the mid-nineteen sixties, Harry Constance made a life-altering journey that led him out of Texas and into the jungles of Vietnam. As a young naval officer, he went from UDT training to the U.S. Navy’s newly formed SEAL Team Two, and then straight into furious action. By 1970, he was already the veteran of three hundred combat missions and the recipient of thirty-two military citations, including three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Good To Go is Constance’s powerful, firsthand account of his three tours of duty as a member of America’s most elite, razor-sharp stealth fighting force. It is a breathtaking memoir of harrowing missions and covert special-ops—from the floodplains of the Mekong Delta to the beaches of the South China Sea—that places the reader in the center of bloody ambushes and devastating firefights. But his extraordinary adventure goes even farther—beyond ‘Nam—as we accompany Constance and the SEALs on astonishing missions to some of the world’s most dangerous hot-spots . . . and experience close-up the courage, dedication, and unparalleled skill that made the U.S. Navy SEALs legendary. Discrete-Time Markov Jump Linear Systems by O.L.V. Costa

Safety critical and high-integrity systems, such as industrial plants and economic systems can be subject to abrupt changes – for instance due to component or interconnection failure, and sudden environment changes etc. Combining probability and operator theory, Discrete-Time Markov Jump Linear Systems provides a unified and rigorous treatment of recent results for the control theory of discrete jump linear systems, which are used in these areas of application. The book is designed for experts in linear systems with Markov jump parameters, but is also of interest for specialists in stochastic control since it presents stochastic control problems for which an explicit solution is possible – making the book suitable for course use. From the reviews: “This text is very well written…it may prove valuable to those who work in the area, are at home with its mathematics, and are interested in stability of linear systems, optimal control, and filtering.” Journal of the American Statistical Association, December 2005 less

Beatrice's Spell by Belinda Jack

The Enduring Legend of Beatrice Cenci

Beatrice Cenci was executed in Rome in September 1599: she was said to be sixteen, and was hauntingly beautiful. Her crime was the murder of her father, a member of one of the greatest Roman families, but his cruel treatment of her, including incestuous rape, moved the people of the city to take her side. Weeping crowds lined the streets, and a special mass is still said in Rome on the anniversary of her death. She was at once innocent and guilty, the victim and the perpetrator of appalling crimes. From that time since, the ambivalent image of Beatrice has attracted writers and artists, and often their obsession with her fed their own self-destruction. In this compelling study, Belinda Jack takes on the dangerous challenge of bringing Beatrice to life, and of tracing her power over those who tried to resurrect her, from the tragedy of Shelley to the novels of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville, from the sculpture of Harriet Hosmer and the photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron to the desperate drama of Antonin Artaud. As we follow the stories of their lives and ambitions, we see how they suffered critical condemnation for their works about Beatrice, and were sometimes pushed to the brink of insanity. Her story, which is one of lust, passion and violence, contains a powerful sense of the forbidden, the taboo that drives people over the edge. Beatrice’s Spell is at once scholarly and utterly engrossing, carrying the power of her story through time. less

The Professional Helper by Willie V. Bryan

The Fundamentals of Being a Helping Professional

The professional helper should be a teacher, a mentor, a motivator and a guide to assisting the helpee find solutions to her life situations. Most clients have within themselves the answers to most if not all of their life situations; quite often, what they need is someone to assist them in sifting through and evaluating the various possible responses to the situation. The objective of The Professional Helper is to provide a basic understanding of various kinds of helping relationships and characteristics that an effective helper must possess. In this book, the terms helper and counselor are used interchangeably and also refer to numerous other helpers such as social workers, case managers, and rehabilitation specialists. Although this book primarily discusses helping from the standpoint of being a formal professional process, this should not be interpreted to mean that informal helping is less important than professional helping. The fact is that it takes both types of helpers for humans to survive. While some texts attempt to classify helpers by certain professions and/or academic and license/certification, this text is more concerned with identifying the qualities, both personal and professional, that the helper should have in order to be an effective helper. Such qualities include integrity, compassion, self-confidence, patience, availability and, most relevant, being an effective listener. Readers will be given suggestions in detail for becoming an effective listener, such as asking questions, observing body language, listening for logic and the tone of one’s voice, and listening to the responses to your questions. Other topics include understanding cultural differences and disabilities, as well as understanding the differences of individual and family counseling. The Professional Helper will be a beneficial text to counseling students, as well as social work students, human resource students, psychology students, sociology students and human relations students. less

Russia and America: A Philosophical Comparison by W.J. Gavin

Development and Change of Outlook from the 19th to the 20th Century

In this year of bicentennial celebration, there will no doubt take place several cultural analyses of the American tradition. This is only as it should be, for without an extensive, broad-based inquiry into where we have come from, we shall surely not foresee where we might go. Nonetheless, most cultural analyses of the American context suffer from a common fault – the lack of a different context to use for purposes of comparison. True, American values and ideals were partly inherited from the European tradition. But that tradition is in many ways an inadequate mode of comparison. Without going too far afield, let us note two points: first, European culture was the proud inheritor of the Renaissance tradition, and, going back still further, of classical culture; second, the European countries are compact. Their land masses are such that the notion of “frontier” simply would not have arisen in the same way as it did in America. On the other side of the globe, however, there does exist a country capable of serving as a suitable mirror. We speak, of course, of Russia. That country also came relatively late onto the cultural horizon, and was not privy to the Renaissance tradition. Furthermore, her land mass is such as to be “experi mentally infmite” in character – not unlike the American frontier. It is hoped that much can be leamed about the present cultural context by com paring the two countries in their youthful stages. less
