Selected Poems by Paul Farley

Paul Farley is now widely recognized as one of the leading English poets writing today. Selected Poems takes stock of a singular talent of great formal gifts: for readers new to his work, this is an ideal and generous introduction, drawing on four collections from his acclaimed debut The Boy from the Chemist is Here to See You to his most recent, The Dark Film. Farley is a cultural archivist, a nostalgist of the darkest and most unsettling kind, and a meticulous curator of those fleeting details which define our lives and times most poignantly: he already reads like one of the poets by whom future generations will know us best. His Selected Poems is a marvellous introduction to one of poetry’s most capacious and eclectic imaginations.

Essence of the Challenge by SJD Peterson

The competition is on when two sexy players set their sights on one woman who has no intention of being anyone’s prize. Will the ultimate challenge be true love? With too many relationships ending in heartache under her belt, the new and improved Symone Adams is loud, proud and on the prowl. She has removed the heart she’s normally worn on her sleeve and tucked it safely under lock and key. What she wants now is to explore the appeal of meaningless, mind-blowing sex. After six months of self-imposed celibacy hell, she heads to Menjo’s and directly into the path of two very determined players. Zander and Marco are pros when it comes to seduction, yet each has grown bored with their conquests. When these two strangers set their sights on the same stunning beauty, the competition is on. Both embark on a full balls-to-the-wall effort to win not only Symone’s body, but her heart as well. What none of them can predict, though, is where their chance encounter will take them, especially Marco and Zander. While the men focus on winning Symone, it’s the electricity arcing in the air between them that will be the real challenge. less

The Metaphysics of Extrinsic Properties by Vera Hoffmann-Kolss

This book aims to develop a philosophical theory of extrinsic properties – of properties whose instantiation by an object does not only depend on what the object itself is like, but also on features of its environment. Various accounts of the intrinsic/extrinsic distinction are analysed in detail, and it is argued that the most promising approach to defining this distinction is to consider extrinsic properties as a particular type of relational property. Moreover, it is shown that two key notions in the metaphysics of properties, the supervenience relation and the dispositional/categorical distinction, whose scope is usually restricted to intrinsic properties, can fruitfully be applied to extrinsic properties as well. less

Network-Centric Collaboration and Supporting Frameworks by Luis M. Camarinha-Matos

IFIP TC 5 WG 5.5, Seventh IFIP Working Conference on Virtual Enterprises, 25-27 September 2006, Helsinki, Finland

Collaborative networks in action Collaborative Networks (CN) is a fast developing area, as shown by the already large number of diverse real-world implemented cases and the dynamism of its related involved research community. Benefiting from contributions of multiple areas, namely computer science, computer engineering, communications and networking, management, economy, social sciences, law and ethics, etc. , the area of Collaborative Networks is being consolidated as a new scientific discipline of its own. . On one hand significant steps towards a stronger theoretical foundation for this new discipline are being taken. On the other hand, a growing number of application cases are being developed and applied in industry and services. A good collection of active and emerging VO Breeding Environments and Professional Virtual Communities can be found in various regions of the world. This phenomenon is particularly evident in Europe where considerable investments in collaborative networks have been made in many of its regions. Based on the experiences and lessons learned in many research projects and pilot cases developed during the last decade, a new emphasis is now being put on the development of holistic frameworks, combining business models, conceptual models, governance principles and methods, as well as supporting infrastructures and services. In fact, reaching the phase in which the computer and networking technologies provide a good starting basis for the establishment of collaborative platforms, the emphasis is now turning to the understanding of the collaboration promotion mechanisms and CN governance principles. less

The Bioengineered Forest by Steven H. Strauss

Challenges for Science and Society

Bioengineering offers many opportunities for forestry. Bioengineered trees can produce more valuable wood, help reclaim contaminated land, improve the health of urban trees, and facilitate pest management. But the ecological risks are complex, and public views about the ethical acceptability of genetic engineering vary widely. Unique in its breadth and diversity, The Bioengineered Forest begins with a survey of the range of forestry practices for which the use of biotechnologies might be appropriate. Scholars representing diverse academic perspectives and viewpoints examine in depth the economic and environmental rationale for forest biotechnologies and the current state of technology with respect to gene performance and safety. They consider the contemporary political and economic environment in which bioengineering is being introduced and where the ‘genomic revolution’ might take forestry and genetic engineering in the future. The Bioengineered Forest presents compelling arguments in favor of genetic engineering. Just as powerfully, it examines the significant technical and legal hurdles involved in genetic engineering, the undesirable environmental and social consequences that might result from its misapplication, and the risks for businesses that are looking too exclusively for near-term benefits. less

Analysis of Variance Designs by Glenn Gamst

A Conceptual and Computational Approach with SPSS and SAS

ANOVA (Analysis Of Variance) is one of the most fundamental and ubiquitous univariate methodologies employed by psychologists and other behavioural scientists. Analysis of Variance Designs presents the foundations of this experimental design, including assumptions, statistical significance, strength of effect, and the partitioning of the variance. Exploring the effects of one or more independent variables on a single dependent variable as well as two-way and three-way mixed designs, this textbook offers an overview of traditionally advanced topics for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in the behavioural and social sciences. Separate chapters are devoted to multiple comparisons (post hoc and planned/weighted), ANCOVA, and advanced topics. Each of the design chapters contains conceptual discussions, hand calculations, and procedures for the omnibus and simple effects analyses in both SPSS and the new ‘click and shoot’ SAS Enterprise Guide interface. less
