Southwest Airlines turns in-depth interviews with the company’s leaders, managers, employees, and passengers into a powerful case study of this highly successful, game-changing business. Ranging from the early days of the company to the present, the book covers the history of the airline and its founders, while also detailing the unique corporate culture that attracts employees and passengers alike.
Throughout its history, Southwest has championed a culture that puts employees first, creating a productive workforce by hiring for “attitude before aptitude” (because skills can be taught) and allowing employees to be themselves at work. The founders’ philosophies of “servant leadership” and a “fun-LUVing” attitude continue to attract employees and influence the company’s daily work today. In detailing the airline’s inner workings in the words of its own people, this book shows other companies how they can emulate Southwest’s powerful business model and strategies, as well as its hiring practices and corporate culture.

A Study of Julius Caesar, Measure for Measure, Antony and Cleopatra
The opening chapter traces the history of the term ‘problem plays’ as applied to Shakespeare and defines it more clearly and precisely than has been done in the past. Julius Caesar, Measure for Measure, Antony and Cleopatra are then discussed in separate chapters, not only as problem plays but from various points of view: such matters as themes, structural pattern, character-problems, the play’s relation to its sources as well as to other plays in the canon, are all touched upon.

In this revised edition of their concise, readable, yet wide-ranging book, Greg Berman and Aubrey Fox tackle a question students and scholars of law, criminology, and political science constantly face: what mistakes have led to the problems that pervade the criminal justice system in the United States? The reluctance of criminal justice policymakers to talk openly about failure, the authors argue, has stunted the public conversation about crime in this country and stifled new ideas. It has also contributed to our inability to address such problems as chronic offending in low-income neighborhoods, an overreliance on incarceration, the misuse of pretrial detention, and the high rates of recidivism among parolees. Berman and Fox offer students and policymakers an escape from this fate by writing about failure in the criminal justice system. Their goal is to encourage a more forthright dialogue about criminal justice, one that acknowledges that many new initiatives fail and that no one knows for certain how to reduce crime. For the authors, this is not a source of pessimism, but a call to action. This revised edition is updated with a new foreword by Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., and afterword by Greg Berman.

According to Robin Higham and Stephen J. Harris, “Flight has been part of the human dream for aeons, and its military application has likely been the dark side of that dream for almost as long.” In the twentieth century, this dream and its dark side unfolded as the air forces of the world went to war, bringing destruction and reassessment with each failure. Why Air Forces Fail examines the complex, often deep-seated, reasons for the catastrophic failures of the air forces of various nations. Higham and Harris divide the air forces into three categories of defeat: forces that never had a chance to win, such as Poland and France; forces that started out victorious but were ultimately defeated, such as Germany and Japan; and finally, those that were defeated in their early efforts yet rose to victory, such as the air forces of Britain and the United States.
The contributing authors examine the complex causes of defeats of the Russian, Polish, French, British, Italian, German, Argentine, and American air services. In all cases, the failures stemmed from deep, usually prewar factors that were shaped by the political, economic, military, and social circumstances in the countries. Defeat also stemmed from the anticipation of future wars, early wartime actions, and the precarious relationship between the doctrine of the military leadership and its execution in the field.
Anthony Christopher Cain’s chapter on France’s air force, l’Armée de l’Air, attributes France’s loss to Germany in June 1940 to a lack of preparation and investment in the air force. One major problem was the failure to centralize planning or coordinate a strategy between land and air forces, which was compounded by aborted alliances between France and countries in eastern Europe, especially Poland and Czechoslovakia. In addition, the lack of incentives for design innovation in air technologies led to clashes between airplane manufacturers, laborers, and the government, a struggle that resulted in France’s airplanes’ being outnumbered by Germany’s more than three to one by 1940.
Complemented by reading lists and suggestions for further research, Why Air Forces Fail provides groundbreaking studies of the causes of air force defeats.

Asian economies strengthened their monetary and currency management after the Asian financial crisis of 1997 – 1998, and came through the global financial crisis of 2007 – 2009 relatively well. Nevertheless, the recent global crisis has presented new challenges. This book develops recommendations for monetary and currency policy in Asian economies aimed at promoting macroeconomic and financial stability in an environment of global economic shocks and volatile capital flows. Monetary and Currency Policy Management in Asia draws lessons from crises and makes concrete macroeconomic policy recommendations aimed at minimizing the impacts of an economic and financial downturn, and setting the stage for an early return to sustainable growth. The focus is on short-term measures related to the cycle. The three main areas addressed are: monetary policy measures, both conventional and unconventional, to achieve both macroeconomic and financial stability; exchange rate policy and foreign exchange reserve management, including the potential for regional cooperation to stabilize currency movements; and ways to ease the constraints on policy resulting from the so-called 'impossible trinity' of fixed exchange rates, open capital accounts, and independent monetary policy. This is one of the first books since the global financial crisis to specifically and comprehensively address the implications of the crisis for monetary and currency policy in emerging market economies, especially in Asia. Presenting a broad menu of policy options for financial reform and regulation, the book will be of great interest to finance experts and policymakers in the region as well as academics and researchers of financial and Asian economics as well as economic development.

These Lecture Notes are based partly on a lecture given by one of us (H. R. ) at Tiibingen University in Spring 1991 and partly on a lecture given at the f Egyptian-German Spring School “Particle and Nuclear Phyic I’ in Cairo in April 1992. They are addressed to graduate students and young esearch workers in theoretical physics. Some knowledge ofquantum field theory, especially on func tional integral techniques, are required. These Notes are intended to give a ped agogical introduction into the description of hadrons, Le. , mesons and baryons, within a quark model based on a chirally invariant quantum field theory. A more detailed description of of the subject in Chap. 4, the chiral soliton of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, is given in a recent review [AHW95]. In these Notes we have used results from recent research papers. It is a pleasureto thank our coauthors for their fruitful collaboration. We are especially indebted to Dr. Herbert Weigel who carried the main load in the investigations concerning the NJL soliton. We thank also Albrecht Buck and Udo Ziickert for their valuable contributions. Furthermore we also acknowledge discussions with Kurt Langfeld, Lorenz von Smekal, Christian Weiss, Roman Friedrich, Axel Bender, Gerhard Hellstern, and Jiirgen Schlienz. Tiibingen, January 1995 R. Useful advice from the father of nymph fishing
Extraordinary observations of the trout’s world
George Edward MacKenzie Skues has been described not only as the father of nymph fishing but as the greatest fly fisher who ever lived. He was also a modest, humorous, and warmly companionable writer. Both beginners and experts find his work accessible, entertaining, and enormously informative.
Skues was that rarest of angling authorities, the iconoclast with a reverential respect for fly-fishing’s traditions. A leading student of the sport’s history and literature, Skues had a rare gift for sifting through many generations’ accumulation of opinion and advice, keeping only what was truly useful and adapting it to the needs of anglers in a rapidly changing world. Skues on Trout showcases one of angling’s greatest theorists sharing his hard-won wisdom along his beloved trout streams.
